As some of you may be aware from my updates I recently had a Peel, which is a little different to the AHA Peels I usually have!
I like to offer clients an honest and informed choice regarding treatments, and that includes the bits about pain and flakiness. Hence, I put myself in your position and stepped up for the Blue Peel Radiance by Obagi. This is a Peel that can show immediate results, but ideally requires 4-6 treatments over a few weeks.
All Peels use an acid-base to literally ‘burn’ off the top layer of skin, thereby encouraging cell renewal for fresher, younger looking skin. Generally, the higher the concentration of acid, the deeper the Peel and the longer the downtime.
However, the Obagi Blue Radiance Peel has a very low level of salicylic acid. It is designed to be used in a course of six ‘low-burn’ treatments, and is perfect if you cannot accommodate the week of downtime associated with one-off deeper Peels. Salicylic acid–based Peels are used to improve patient outcomes for a range of skin conditions, including acne scarring, photo damage, and melasma. There is indication that it could also be beneficial in the treatment of pigmentary changes in darker skin.
Blue Peel Radiance effectively exfoliates the uppermost damaged skin layers, and claims to leave the skin fresh, renewed and radiant. I reckoned this HAD to be worth a try.
I was forewarned that I would feel an intense heat and itchiness after the solution was applied, and I think this is the most nerve-wracking bit. However, it IS short-lived at around 30 seconds. It does pass and isn’t painful – the worst aspect is worrying that it will get worse or never stop! Trust me, it really isn’t that bad! A second layer of the salicylic solution is then applied and left on your skin for 10 minutes. When the 10 minutes are up, any remnants of the acid solution is sponged from your skin. I will then apply a good quality SPF to your skin.
I have noticed that the time it takes for your skin to peel differs from person to person, and the amount of dead epidermis shed also depends on type of skin, levels of sun damage etc. My skin started to flake a day or so after my friend, and I also experienced less peeling than her. I put this down to years of mistreating my skin in hot climates!
So, one Peel down and I feel like I’ve had the world’s best exfloliation. I can see a marked improvement in my complexion and it has been commented on already. Research indicates that my skin’s texture and tone will continue to improve with the next few treatments. Now I know what to expect I am thrilled by the aspect of undoing years of sitting in the sun slathered in baby oil! I’m uber excited to see what the next few sessions bring. Tighter, brighter, flawless skin, I’m coming to get ya!
What are Obagi Blue Peels?
Obagi Blue Peels are an in-office chemical facial peel procedure, which will accelerate the transformation to beautiful, healthier looking skin. There are two types of Blue Peels: the Original Blue Peel and the Blue Peel Radiance. This leading Skin Peel treatment helps get rid of blemishes, acne scars, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and sun damage. The Obagi Blue Skin Peel can be applied to the neck, chest, hands, back, arms and legs and is FDA approved (Food and Drug Administration) to dramatically improve your complexion.
What is the Difference Between the Two Peels?
The two Blue Peels that I have mentioned are very different. The Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE is considered a medium level Peel. The ORIGINAL Obagi Blue Peel is considered a deep level Peel. It is confusing because both Peels have the word Blue Peel, but it was a marketing decision made by Obagi.
Original Blue Peel by Obagi (deep level)
For the Original Blue Peel we recommend that the patient undertakes a course of retin-A for about 6 weeks prior to the treatment. I will happily advise you further about this.
For the Blue Peel RADIANCE, we feel that no pre-treatment is needed. Feel free to jump right in!
How Do Obagi Blue Peels Work?
The Blue Peel Radiance works by using a low concentration of Trichlororoacetic Chemical Acid (TCA) mixed with a special blue (glycerine) base, the Obagi Blue Peel allows me to regulate the depth of the peel and remove surface layers of aged and damaged skin. These dead cells are then replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skins own clarity and tightness to resurface. The procedure requires specialist training and experience to achieve this highly effective Peel.
Who are Obagi?
Obagi Medical Products, Inc., is a global speciality pharmaceutical company, founded by leading skin care experts in 1988, and is now owned by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. Obagi® products are designed to minimize the appearance of premature skin aging, skin damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, and sun damage and are primarily available through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medical spas, and skin care physicians.
What are Skin Peels?
A chemical peel is a cosmetic, chemical treatment that can be performed by a professional to help lessen the appearance of blemishes, freckles, age spots, photo damage, acne, light scarring, and any number of other skin irregularities. They can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and give new life to sun-damaged skin.
What Happens During Treatment?
It normally takes around 15 minutes to apply depending on how many layers are required. Once the Obagi Blue Peel process has been completed you will normally be left with slightly blue skin. This typically washes out within 24 hours so you do not need to be worried! You may typically feel a burning or tingling sensation, often around the mouth, which will last around 1-3 minutes. The amount of time the Peel stays on varies from person to person but typically the deeper, Original Peel is on your skin for between 1 and 5 minutes and the Radiance for 8-10 minutes.
Is it Dangerous?
Long-term side effects of chemical Peels are rare and unfortunate. If you have an AHA or TCA peel it is extremely unlikely that you will experience any long-term side effects after the initial healing period. With all Peels however, it is probable that the skin will remain sensitive to sunlight for a long time and it is therefore highly recommended that you use a high-factor sun cream at least twice a day for the foreseeable future.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
The skin will begin to peel within about 3 days and this peeling normally lasts for around 3/4 days. Expect your skin to be fully healed after a maximum of 10 days. At this point you should notice a definite improvement in the appearance of your skin. It should look healthier, smoother and more youthful.
From the Blue Peel Radiance you can expect really radiant results on all skin types. It will improve photo damaged skin and hyperpigmentation (spots) and will also markedly improve texture and provide a superficial exfoliation.
These Peels provide instant radiance – tighter, smoother, brighter-looking skin after just 1 use, however, I recommend a series of 4-6 peels to provide best overall results.
The Original Blue Peel is particularly good for scars from blackheads, skin expansion after childbirth, and deep wrinkles. It helps to solve spot problems, smooth face colour and prevents those visible, undesirable age changes. Obagi Original Blue Peel is highly recommended to people in their late 40’s, when the skin is already fading. It is necessary to use the Obagi Nu-Derm products, in conjunction with the Obagi Blue Peel, beforehand, because many patients seeking Obagi Blue Peel treatments generally have a form of damaged or unhealthy skin. It is essential that skin cell function uniformly improves prior to the procedure. This will ensure that the maximum and safest results are obtained from the Peel. Also, post-procedure care is enhanced and downtime is reduced. Prior to undergoing the Blue Peel, the Obagi Nu-Derm system is recommended for a minimum of 6 weeks. Skin with more severe considerations may require 12 to 18 weeks.
There are a few rules to follow, especially following the deeper, Original Blue Peel. Apply product every 2 hours as needed for the next 4-5 days. Towards the end of the next week, you may consider using a generic moisturiser. Obagi do an excellent post-peel moisturiser. However, consider using a gentle cleanser (instead of your usual one) – morning and evening for the next week and avoid exfoliation (ouch!) for 7 days.
Sun Protection is a must! Otherwise you will undo the effects of the Peel. Use liberally and often. Wear a hat if outdoors and try to stay away from all UV rays, including not sitting in sunny windows which some rays penetrate.
