The Green Room, Offering Botox Treatment – Bournemouth, Christchurch, Ringwood and the South Coast
So what is Botox?
Botox is a simple, non-surgical anti wrinkle treatment that can smooth lines for both men and women.
Botox is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.
Botox is a natural protein produced by bacterium and it works by preventing nerve impulses from reaching the muscle which causes the muscle to relax. This then reduces the facial movement and wrinkles giving the individual a softer and more youthful appearance.
How do Botox injections work?
A tiny amount is injected into the hyperactive muscles, which blocks the nerve impulse from reaching these muscles. The muscle simply relaxes or ‘goes to sleep’ and this relaxation enables the skin to relax and the lines smooth away.
Botox blocks the transmission of acetylcholine from the nerves to the muscle. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter which send a message to the muscle telling it to contract or tense up. With the flow of acetylcholine blocked or significantly reduced, the muscle can no longer retract and it relaxes. As a result, the wrinkled areas smooth out and soften.
Where does Botox work best?
The upper third of the face is where Botox is most commonly used – reducing frown lines, both across the forehead and between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet. However, the cosmetic benefits are continually being expanded as practitioners find new ways to use this product.
For example, Botox can be used to lift the eyebrows by a few millimetres, giving the impression of a brow lift for less severe brow drooping. It is also used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Dr Bob Khanna, a cosmetic dental surgeon and an internationally renowned expert in facial aesthetics, uses Botox® to tackle teeth grinding which is a new procedure being carried out in the US.
What happens during a Botox treatment?
I will ask my client to frown or smile to assess muscle movement, and then determine the injection site to achieve the best results. You don’t have to have this frozen look that is often seen on celebrities and TV personalities. Many people are now choosing the more natural and softer look but I will work with you to achieve the look you prefer.
The needles that I use for injections are paediatric needles (used on children) so very tiny in size and feels even softer than a pin prick.
I also use a different needle for every single injection that I administer – having worked as a nurse for 10 years, I know that after one or two injections the needles will loose their sharpness, so this not only makes it more comfortable for my client, it also reduces the risk of bruising and ensures you are getting the exact amount drawn up into the syringe.
You can return to work or day to day activities immediately, but will be asked to follow post treatment guidelines which you will be issued with after your treatment on a small card to take with you.
Botox treatment takes a matter of minutes and involves just a few tiny injections, and over a short period of time there is a noticeable improvement in facial lines, leading to a smoother, more youthful complexion.
You should notice an improvement in the treated areas from 10 days to 2 weeks time.
Results from your first Botox treatment will last around 3 to 4 months and for your second and third repeat treatments, you can go for longer for the benefit to continue.
Will my lines look worse if my Botox treatment is discontinued?
No. Should you choose to discontinue Botox treatments, your lines will gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.
Is Botox safe?
Data shows that Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is well tolerated and that it is an effective treatment for reducing the severity of glabellar lines with treatment achieving high levels of patient satisfaction.
As with any other type of procedure, there are certain risks, complications, and side effects that can occur with Botox. These all need to be taken fully into consideration. Small bruises or bleeding at the site of injection can occur, but side effects such as headaches, eyelid ptosis, diplopia and brow droop can happen but are very rare.
Botox is used in a variety of therapeutic areas and is also one of the few treatments that can be given to children over the age of 2 years to treat the condition cerebral palsy. However the Botox dose given to children is around 20 times the amount I use in clinic.
So this gives you an idea of how little I actually have to use in the facial muscles for cosmetic purposes.
Botox has been actively used for cosmetic purposes for over 10 years in tens of thousands of patients, and there are over 20 different licenses in 70 countries worldwide. It has a well respected cosmetic license here in the UK and for this use, Doctors, Nurses and pharmacies may prescribe by another name but it is exactly the same as Botox and comes in a smaller vial.
