Blue Peel Radiance by Obagi
As some of you may be aware from my updates I recently had a peel, which is a little different to the AHA peels I usually have/do!
I like to offer my clients an honest and informed choice regarding treatments and that includes all the info about pain and flakiness. Hence, I put myself in your position and stepped up for the Blue Peel Radiance by Obagi.
This is a peel that can show immediate results but ideally requires 4-6 treatments over a few weeks.
All peels use an acid-base to literally take off the top layer of skin thereby encouraging cell renewal for fresher, younger looking skin. Generally, the higher the concentration of acid, the lower the PH value and thus the deeper the peel and the longer the downtime.
However, the Obagi Blue Radiance peel has a very low level of salicylic (20%) glycolic and lactic acid blend, combined with calming agent, liquorice root and willow bark. It is designed to be used in a course of six ‘low-burn’ treatments; it’s perfect if you can’t accommodate the week of downtime associated with deeper TCA peels. Salicylic acid–based peels are used to improve patient outcomes for a range of skin conditions, including acne scarring, photo damage, and melasma. There is indication that it could also be beneficial in the treatment of pigmentation changes in darker skin.
Blue Peel Radiance effectively exfoliates the uppermost damaged skin layers and claims to leave your skin fresh, renewed, and radiant. I reckoned this HAD to be worth a try. I was forewarned that I would feel an intense heat and itchiness after the solution was applied and, I think, this is the most nerve-wracking bit. However, it IS short-lived at around 30 seconds. It does pass and is painful but bearable – the worst aspect is worrying that it will get worse or never stop! Trust me, it really isn’t that bad!
A second layer of the Blue Peel solution is then applied and left on your skin for 12 minutes. When the 12 minutes are up, any remnants of the acid solution is sponged off your skin. I will then apply the Obagi Vitamin C serum and SPF 50. I’ve tried a lot of serums and sunscreens but this is by far the nicest I have ever used. The serum doesn’t leave that greasy shine and the SPF I could use as a moisturiser, there’s no casper the ghost look and feels like silk on my skin.
I have noticed that the time it takes for your skin to peel differs from person to person and the amount of dead epidermis shed also depends on type of skin, levels of sun damage etc. My skin started to flake on day 4, but my model Becky, flaked the second day. I also experienced less peeling than Becky. I put this down to years of mistreating my skin in hot climates and not wearing SPF every day!
So, one peel down and I feel like I’ve had the world’s best exfoliation. I can see a marked improvement in my complexion and it’s been commented on daily since the peel! Research indicates my skin’s texture and tone will continue to improve with the next few treatments. Now I know what to expect I’m thrilled by the aspect of undoing years of sitting in the sun slathered in baby oil!
I’m really excited to see what the next few sessions bring as I’m likely to peel a lot more.
Tighter, brighter, flawless skin, I’m coming to get you!
